The Festival
The third edition of the Maskarade Opera Festival in 2024 stood out for featuring two opera studios focused on works by G. Puccini, joining the celebrations of the centenary of the composer's death. The festival presented La Bohème at the Teatro Casyc in Santander, where the premiere took place. This classic, first performed in 1896, continues to captivate audiences with its emotional love story between the poet Rodolfo and the delicate seamstress Mimi, set in the vibrant bohemian Paris of the 19th century.
For two weeks, young artists from France, China, and Spain gathered in Santander to participate in intensive masterclasses in vocal technique, interpretation, and stagecraft, preparing to debut in some of the most iconic roles of La Bohème.
The Maskarade Opera Festival included three lyrical galas held at the Palacio de Elsedo in Pámanes. During these performances, the students of the festival’s opera studio performed recitals featuring some of the most famous arias and duets from La Bohème, ahead of the much-anticipated premiere at Teatro Casyc.
The production was accompanied by pianist Su Cui and musically directed by Christian Frattima, with Marco Iezzi leading the stage direction. Their extensive experience and artistic vision greatly enhanced the staging. Additionally, the stage chorus was composed of members from the opera studio, enriched by the fresh and energetic voices of the 'Varpelis' children's choir from Lithuania, further elevating the overall performance.
